Though Animal Crossing: New Horizons seemed to experience a decline in its player base by the latter half of 2021, Nintendo easily resolved the issue by providing a jam-packed yet free 2.0 content update. What’s more, the announcement and release of the Happy Home Paradise paid DLC gave players more to do on their island every day. With new furniture, new villagers, and more, it is not surprising to see a player spending hours working on their own island improvements. This is likely how the player discovered the bug that made their island getaway waters turn bloody crimson.

On Reddit, user clintwoodtp84 posted a single photo that showed how the river on their Animal Crossing: New Horizons island flowed with red water instead of blue. The Redditor did not offer any explanation about what was going on in their photo caption, however they did say that the phenomenon was “worrying.” Given that there was only one photo in the post, it does not show if the bug affects only the waters that run in the rivers, or if it also affects the ocean that surrounds the island as well.

Many replies on the Reddit thread poked fun at the issue, even connecting it to the Blood Moon phenomenon from Breath of the Wild. Others likened the red waters to a plague, and asked the player to watch out for frogs and locusts. However, given that the waters in Animal Crossing: New Horizons is where fish are caught, it may pose an issue for clintwoodtp84 in the future, if the bug is not resolved.

Nonetheless, it can be quite surprising for an Animal Crossing: New Horizons player to boot up their game and suddenly see the red waters flowing through their island. Hopefully this is not a permanent issue, does not affect other players, and can be fixed with a simple reset of the Nintendo Switch console.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is available on the Nintendo Switch.
